Fluffy, South Carolina
This is Fluffy & his story.
Fluffy- "I live in Winnsboro,SC/ Fairfield County."
Weight: 30-35 lbs. Will be going to the vet shortly. No aggression issues. Does not seem to be phased by cats.
Hi, I'm Fluffy & as you can tell I'm not Fluffy anymore. I don't have much hair left but even so I am still a happy dog. I am owned by an elderly man who was made to be my owner by a woman who was caring for him-- he never wanted me but is kind to me/ we use to sit together in the evenings-- 2 lonely souls. She told him if he lived in her trailer he had to be my owner as she needed someone to take me as she had too many dogs & was getting in trouble for the number of dogs she had.
She was made guardian over this old man & controlled his money/ she was better to me than to him. All went ok for me as long as the woman was alive but she died w/ cancer about 2 yrs ago & this is when I started going down.
The woman's son left it up to some of his workers to feed me as the old man was not really able to do so. They did not feed me & I almost starved to death; my heartworm medicine ceased as did my flea/ tick medication. The old man would share his canned spaghetti w/ me. I needed dog food to keep my coat healthy & to keep weight on me. The old man had no money nor way to get food for me nor the other things I needed.
The nice lady who is writing this asking for help keeps tons of food in a dog house for me so I'm eating better now & she has been bathing me & putting on flea medication. I am getting better & much of my hair has grown back-- hard to believe that, right!?.
NOW, I hear that my old master is going to a nursing home and the lady writing this is trying to find me somewhere to live!!!! My life has not been good for a long time & I am scared!!! Really I have never had anyone who wanted & loved me and I am such a nice guy who use to be a VERY HANDSOME FELLOW --if I must say so myself! bragging on myself"!
I love to run and play and the lady says I have a running gait like a butterfly!!! (They are pretty u know!) -- Anyway, I need a home or a rescue to take me before the old man has to go away as I heard the son say he'd just have to drop me at the shelter which I have heard the lady say is a kill shelter. I overheard the lady say to someone who came to help her w/ my dog house that I will not make it a day in that shelter as it is a HIGH KILL & a dog looking like me will go to the Rainbow Bridge immediately!
I am not ready to die yet as I would love to have someone to love & laugh w/ me! --
I DON'T HAVE A HOME -- PLEASE HELP ME!

Columbus, Missouri
Cody was chained to a
fence in front of a place of business with a bowl of water and a piece of
tape with his name on it. He was skin and bones!!! His ears were covered
with fly strikes. I have a feeling that he was abandoned, and someone
wanted to try to get him help by knowing these business owners would either
take him in or get him the help he needed.
This is just another sign of the
desperate times we live in. Humane Society picked him up and they called
DDB. I have fostered him for about 2 weeks. Cody is approx. 1 - 1 1/2
years old, and is now UTD on shows, HW negative, dewormed, neutered, potty
trained, and just a big hunk of raw energy!
Not a mean bone in this boys
body! He gets along great with the other dogs, and would really make a
great one on one companion dog. Cody is very easy going with all people
and pets, but stays focused on his leader! He loves to ride in the car and
would also be a great employee at the workplace!
Cody does not do well
being left alone unless he is a high security facility!! He desperately
wants to be joined at the hip with his master and will be a devoted pet
forever if someone would give him the chance! P.S. Cody is an avid
fetcher, I've tried to wear him out, but can't!!

DONTE, North Carolina
Immediate Foster/Adoption Needed!

I came from a life of living chained 24/7 in a fenced yard. I know what you’re
thinking, why chained when the yard is fenced? I wondered the same thing – 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
My next-door dog neighbor was fortunate enough to have a group called “Dogs Deserve
Better” put up a fence for him so he could live his life unchained. While they were
working on this, they noticed me in the next yard over. They asked my neighbors
owner about me and she explained how I had to live, along with being hit in the face
and head whenever I tried to greet my owners when they would come outside.
The representative for Dogs Deserve Better took a closer look at me and noticed
evidence on my neck above my very tight chain of a previous embedded chain or
collar, as well as an injury on my back leg that was caused by my chain getting
wrapped up around my ankle.
She talked with my owners and was able to convince them to turn me over to her to
find me another home. So my 2 new caring friends from DDB picked me up, took me to
get all my shots, and I tested negative for heartworms. They will be taking me to
get neutered soon.
They are now paying to keep me at a boarding kennel until they can find me the happy
home that I deserve. I do have a lot of energy from being chained up for so long so
I would really like to have a large area to run and play in. I am a little leery of
hands coming toward my face and head because I only know of human hands hurting me
when doing this. My new human friends come by to visit me often and spend time
playing with me. They are helping me to learn that now the hands approaching me are
good hands and they don’t hurt. I really like these human hands, as they are
showing me that there are caring people out there and that I am loved.
I seem to do well with my dog neighbors at the kennel. I’m not sure about cats
because I have never been given the chance to meet any. I really am a good boy, my
new friends will agree. I am looking forward to settling down in a new, happy, and
loving home, free from chains. If you think you can provide this for me, please
contact my friends Shari or Wendy. Here are their numbers:

ROSCOE, Indiana
Roscoe, is a sweet three year old purebred German Shepherd. He is neutered, UTD on vacs and heartworm negative. He was recently rescued from life on a chain and is looking for a forever home to call his own. Roscoe hates cats but likes everyone else. He seems to have an issue with male dogs larger than himself. We think this may be because he is so little and skinny ( only weighing in at 57 lbs ) that at this point he feels intimidated by their strength and eagerness to play with him. He should weigh at least 90-100 lbs.
If you have room in your heart and home for Roscoe, please contact: chainfreeindiana@yahoo.com
SAMMY, Indiana
Sammy has been on a chain since he was about 3 months old and he is now a year old.
His family finally decided that he should be an indoor dog to a loving home. His ears are bitten pretty bad from all the flies, but we're getting them healed.
His first day at his foster home consisted of him running in their large back yard until it was bed time. He was so excited to be free and have other four legged friends to play with. They have a kiddie pool too and he loves to submerge himself in it. He has been running around and enjoying his freedom so much, that his foster mom can't even get a picture of him. She wishes she could because the smile on his face makes her giggle. The picture posted is of him while he was chained to his pen.
He has been neutered, vaccinated, had his stool tested for intestinal parasites and had a heart worm test. The stool sample and heart worm test both came back negative.
Sammy is ready for his forever home!
If you have room in your home and in your heart for Sammy, contact: ddbrepcoord@dogsdeservebetter.org
DUDLEY, Ohio
Dudley is a 4 year old Shepherd/Husky mix. He weighs 61 lbs, he is up-to-date on shots, neutered and on HW/flea-tick prevention. He is a very good boy BUT, he is very cautious of strangers and new people. Dudley has been thru alot, he had to leave his owner when she was forced to move into a retirement community that did not allow him. Dudley would do very well with other dogs, cats are ok, but needs a home with out small children. Older children would be fine. Dudley knows, sit, down, stay and his name very very well but could use some more training. Dudley needs a fenced yard and lots or room to run. If you can provide Dudley with a chain free foster or forever home.

AMAZING GRACE, Indiana
RESCUED APRIL '08 Hi! I'm Grace. I am a Huggle ! Husky/Beagle mix. Don't you
just love my beautiful blue eyes ? I was left outside, chained and alone
unsupervised. I was visited by a handsome guy and we made 7 puppies. I was left
out there, chained in the cold with my puppies and most of them succumbed to the
frigid weather. My human left me with a family member, separating me from my 2
babies. She had no room for me so she called Dogs Deserve Better. After a couple
of pho9e calls they found my pups and we were reunited, YAY !!! I'm a very good
Mommy and I loved taking care of my babies, but they're adopted out and I'm
alone. I know I am not a puppy - but I am a sweetie pie who needs some love and a home where I can live inside
and be adored for the beautiful lady I am. I am 1 1/2 years old, up to date on
vaccines, and on heartworm preventative and I'm spayed. I love my tennis ball
and I'm learning to walk like a lady on a leash.

JUNE, Indiana
June is a one year old lab/terrier mix. She was chained outside for all of her puppy-hood until being surrendered to a southern Indiana shelter. The shelter then relinquished June to Dogs Deserve Better. June arrived with a terrible leg injury which required her left front leg to be amputated. She has since recovered completely and does not require any further medical treatment for her leg. She can still run like the wind on 3 legs. June has been spayed and is up to date on vaccines. She is also on heart worm preventative and flea & tick preventative. June does very well with cats and will need to be properly introduced to other dogs. She also prefers older children who understand how to play with a dog. June's ideal forever family is one that can devote all of their time, love, and energy to her. June is a happy-go-lucky kind of gal and loves belly rubs. She loves to play in the yard and lounge with you on the couch.
If you are interested in meeting June please contact: chjaynes@yahoo.com, or fill out our adoption application.

LITTLE MAN , Kentucky
Little Man is living on a chain in the county and his people want us to find him a home. Little Man was purchased by his caretaker in Arkansas when he was 8 weeks old under the assumption that he is a Feist/American Bulldog mix. We think he was probably bamboozled; nevertheless, he is a sweet dog who deserves a better life. He is now about 7 months old, good with other dogs, cats, and kids according to the owner. He loves to play. Would you want to help get this sweet dog off the chain and into a home?
Please contact: dwhite@aggressiveonline.net.
LUCY - URGENT!, Ohio

ROSIE, Ohio
Hi. My name is Rosie. I am a 5 year old Border Collie/Lab mix who is really glad that Dogs Deserve Better people found me! Until they did, I was living with Buddy (above), my Rotteweiler/Lab companion, who was chained to a garage in our backyard. I ran, but, even though I was not the one on the chain, nothing made any sense to me. The human who promised to take care of us soon forgot we were there. I spent most of my time being lonely, thirsty, hungry and really afraid. My tongue was so chapped that my rescuers cringed every time they saw me.Deprived of fresh water and nutrition, starved for human companionship and physically abused, I became neurotic and developed fear aggression behavior. But, this summer, Dogs Deserve Better volunteers found me and Buddy, and, after several months, they were able to rescue BOTH OF US! Although I am still a little hesitant around strangers, my foster dad has worked hard to socialize me, so most of my fear has gone away. Thanks to the donations of some generous people, we both went to the vet and got treated for heartworm. I am also spayed and up-to-date on vaccinations. Now, though, he needs to help other dogs whose humans do not take care of them, so he needs me to find my permanent human companion(s). I am house-trained, heal automatically and am happy to share the couch with you or lie in a favorite spot, usually behind or under something. Rosie shares her foster home with 5 other dogs, a kitten, a cat and 2 fish.

Beau, Salem, Oregon
Except for a couple of months, Beau, a pitbull mix, lived his life at the end of a chain. Lucky for him, his owner finally did the right thing and surrendered him to Dogs Deserve Better. Beau has come a long way in a short amount of time. He was a little nervous around new people at first, but each day as he gains confidence, his sweet personality comes out. This 3 1/2 year old weighs 70 lbs and still thinks he is a puppy. He loves playing and running with the other dogs, and doesn't mind being low man on the totem pole. One of his favorite things to do is to lay on his dog bed and play with a chew toy, both of which he has never had. He is not food or toy aggressive. He tolerates his baths very well and likes going for rides in the car. He now knows a few commands and walks pretty good on a leash. A home without cats would be best. He has been neutered and is UTD on shots. His foster mom will also assist with transport if needed. If you have any questions about this very special rescue or would like to meet Beau, please email Ruth at rjainor@msn.com or call 503-881-6055.
